Ellis Island’s Forgotten Hospital

Date: 10/26/07

Haunted? Scared? Spooky? Should be, on Ellis Island had a busy 22 building hospital from 1902-1930. Ellis Island is known for millions of people immigranting to the U.S. This hospital has taken care of so many people. This hospital was abandones for two years until Lorie Conway got to document the hospital. She dug through history to find out all the information she can.

A non-profit organization, Save Ellis Island is trying to save the abandoned hospital and reopen hisotry. She interviewed many family memebers and immigrants also talking about how this place and other hospitals are haunted. But during entry to this hospital years ago, many people were stripped down for a physical, some would be confused and not know what's going on. Some family members were seperated. In 1914, 10,000 patients were treated in 75 different countries.

Many records were lost and Ms. conway hopes her film will lead her to find more clues on the history of this hospital. I believed this article was very well written. It was detailed from beginning to end. The writer focused a lot on the past which was good because there were intervews of patients and what they had to go through. The documentary was sent to PBS and hopefully the film will be seen.

3-Way Battles Again Jolt Eastern Congo

Date: 10/25/07

A country left in poverty and not much to look forward to. This misery that are leaving these people and young children to move away from violence. A fight broke out this weekend involving Congolese government and two militias. Congo is a violent city and it's a killing zone. People are left desperate and have no where to go. The battle between Congloness Army and Laurent Nkunda are left accusing one another of helping the Hutu militias. I feel like this is a mafia war where everyone is fighting over power. Congo's president, Joseph Kabila tried to make peace with Mr. Nkunda and right after that Mr. Kabila made a threat to have his troops turn over their weapons.

I feel like this is a game and putting the whole country in danger. This all began back in 1994 Hutu killed thousands of Tutsi in Rwanda. Now the Hutu militias have formed again and the United Nations are blaming them for beginning a battle. People and especially have been terrorized. Women are also giving birth on the road. Then comes in the Mai-Mai which are Conglonese militanmen. They believe they will be bulletproof if they rubbed oil and take antibiotics. They are a strong and will not back down.

I don't believe the writer talked enough about what happen in 1994 and how this battle began. He could've been more descriptive. All the writer talked about was who was battling who and who they were. A country left with almost nothing, and now it's being corrupted by militias.

Thai Police Arrest Pedophile Suspect

Date: 10/19/07

New technology, the famous creation of worldwide internet and also the most dangerous place to meet. An unknown stranger behind the screen pretending to be someone else. One may think, he's a respectful guy, but not a lot will know he's a pedophile who's been abusing children in Asia. The internet lets you create a whole new identity for yourself.

In Thailand, police arrested Christopher Paul Neil, after having pictures surf over the internet of him faceless abusing & sexually assaulting boys in Vietnam and Cambodia. Police used high tech to trace Mr. Neil actions on the internet. He has been living in Asia for five years teaching English in, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea. He would be prosecuted in Thailand but after will be sent back to Canada where he will be sentenced. Canada is also looking into his previous jobs as a teacher but then asked to leave Roman Catholic elementary school because he wasn't qualify.

Many pedophiles have been going out of the country to become a English teacher and using it as a bait to lure children into trusting them. But it's not only foreigners that abuse children, 90% are abused by locals. The young boy made then complaint saying a Thai man lured him to Mr. Neil's apartment. Two other boys also came forward giving more information. Newspaper also printed postings from his Myspace.

I don't believe the reporter gave enough information about Mr. Neils. They should've investigated more on the boys who came forward. All I read was Mr. Neils jumping from country to country. I wanted this article to be more detailed since the internet and pedophiles have became a known couple. The law in other countries aren't as aware and strict as the U.S. There will never be an end to all these pedophiles assaulting these young kids, there's no stopping them.

Lifers as Teenagers, Now Seeking Second Chance

Date: 10/17/07

A young girl at the age of 14 year olds took 2 lives away and attempted to kill her own sister. Does she deserve a second chance? Ashley Jones helped her boyfriend kill her aunt and grandfather. She also put her grandmother, Mary Nalls in a coma but she still stands by her granddaughter side. Ms. Nalls defends her granddaughter, now 22 years old believing she deserves a second chance. She says, “If children are under age, sometimes they’re not responsible for what they do.” She's only protecting her but at the same time she is a murderer. As taunting as it may be for her, Ms. Jones deserves the same punishment as anyone else.

Laura Poston, the judge who sentenced Ms. Jones believes if she is on parole she will commit more murderers. An active child and to have a mind set out to kill four people should not have parole. She will be a danger to her own family and her own family refuse to foresee what she has done. Some experts like Bryan Stevenson, the executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative believe there is also hope. In this case, I don't see hope for a criminal. Maybe if it was my own child I would have a different point of view.

Latest research also proved 59% of 2,200 prisoners have no parole and are younger than 17 years old that have never convicted a previous crime. And 26% were involved in a murdered but never committed to one. I will contradict my point because those who don't have previous records and depending on their crime should have parole. Those are the ones that have hope for a life. But someone like Ashley Jones to attack and murder her own family members, will not.

Uncertainty for an Orphan Claims in Two Adoptions

Date: 10/12/07

Saving a child's life is one of the best gift you can give him or her. But what do you when a couple adopted the child two different times? Who gets custody of the child? In a battle between Elizabeth Roth Johnson and Dr. Lionel Bissoon who both adopted a Cambodian boy, Rath Chan now name William. For now, Ms. Johnson has custody.

She adopted William a year and half ago through Manhattan Surrogates Court but supposedly also named Dr. Bissoon the child's father. The lawyer, Bonnie Robin for Dr. Bissoon claims this was a fraud because Ms. Johnson never mentioned to him that he was the father. The court has ruled that Dr. Bissoon has adopted William in a full legal process in Cambodia. Ms. Johnson ignored the process of the adoption while she did it in New York. At the same time she believes Dr. Bissoon is using the child to get money.

Dr. Bissoon wants joint custoday and hasn't seen William since December, 2005 due to a fight with Ms. Johnson. In this type of stituation, you can't really tell who's lying. Ms. Johnson seems to be hiding a few facts from the case and making it a longer process to come to a conclusion. Ms. Johnson told Dr. Bissoon that she found his son and even looked like him. But never before have they ever discussed adoption.

In the battle of this five year old child, I believe they should have joint custody. Do whatever they can in the best interest of William. He should have a father and mother, not a single parent raising him. It's a wonderful gift that they save this child life but now they are putting the child in a messy custody battle.

Paintball Accident Made Him a Widower, and Then a Crusader

Date: 10/5/07

Paintballing? It's fun but at the same time very violent. Many of my friends have gone to play and when they come back, all they show me are bruises. Some have asked me to play but it's too risky for me. You need lots of protection and layers just to be safe and i'm not up for that.

A 14 year old accidently killed Colette Contois as she was watching in a pinic area. He was miguided and the small paintball bullet hit her head. She was left unconscious and died at the scene. Not too long ago a 15 year old died in Washington. Mr. Contois is fighting for awareness trying to make the sport more safer. This game is like fighting a war. The valve and cylinder manufacturers had known of this danger.

Manufacturers and paintball centers are trying to address the safety issues. Such as, spoting lose valves, every five years you would need to replace the valves, and unscrew their guns to check their gas cylinders. The owner of the park where Colette Contois died has closed down his park. He gave it up and now he's a carpenter.

I see the fun and adrenaline rush but at the same time so many are risking their lives. That one bullet can do a lot of damage. I believe they should have an age limit and sign an agreement knowing the responsibilities. Nowadays trying to address important issue and passing a bill can take forever.

Three Teenagers Die in a Car Crash in Connecticut

Date: 10/5/07

This story is like any other drunk driving teenage story but at the same time I can relate to it. I was in a car and someone I know was driving home under the influence of alcohol. I tried to keep that person awake but at the same time he kept swirling in and out of the lane. We were worried about cops being on the highway. Since then, we always told ourselves, we're not going to drive until we know for sure we're okay or simply pay for a cab home. Now everyday in the newspaper, there's always an article talking about how one teenager died or 2 and so on. It never really hits them until someone close to them dies.

A reckless driver, 17 year old Anthony Apruzzese died along with his 14 year old sister and a 15 year old friend. An investigation being conducted saying the speed limit was raised to 40 miles per hour but he went over. The owner of the boat tried to move his car but it was too late. The Subaru crashed into the boat.

Anthony had a past with traffic problem, didn't put on his seatbelt and a life threatening accident. He talked about the accident on his facebook which left him and a friend hospitalized. This was due to drunk driving but the department of motor vehicles only suspended his license for 90 days. Even after his suspension he got pulled over again for refusing to stop at a stop sign. He only had his license for a year and caused this much damage. The state should've revoked his license. Parents of Anthony & Jessica Apruzzese wanted to be left alone.

Young teenagers nowadays don't understand how dangerous it is to drive under the influence of alcohol. For Anthony Apruzzese he should've realize to drive more carefully after being hospitalize and putting another life in danger. I guess it didn't hit him yet. Now he killed himself, his sister, & a friend.
