Uncertainty for an Orphan Claims in Two Adoptions

Date: 10/12/07

Saving a child's life is one of the best gift you can give him or her. But what do you when a couple adopted the child two different times? Who gets custody of the child? In a battle between Elizabeth Roth Johnson and Dr. Lionel Bissoon who both adopted a Cambodian boy, Rath Chan now name William. For now, Ms. Johnson has custody.

She adopted William a year and half ago through Manhattan Surrogates Court but supposedly also named Dr. Bissoon the child's father. The lawyer, Bonnie Robin for Dr. Bissoon claims this was a fraud because Ms. Johnson never mentioned to him that he was the father. The court has ruled that Dr. Bissoon has adopted William in a full legal process in Cambodia. Ms. Johnson ignored the process of the adoption while she did it in New York. At the same time she believes Dr. Bissoon is using the child to get money.

Dr. Bissoon wants joint custoday and hasn't seen William since December, 2005 due to a fight with Ms. Johnson. In this type of stituation, you can't really tell who's lying. Ms. Johnson seems to be hiding a few facts from the case and making it a longer process to come to a conclusion. Ms. Johnson told Dr. Bissoon that she found his son and even looked like him. But never before have they ever discussed adoption.

In the battle of this five year old child, I believe they should have joint custody. Do whatever they can in the best interest of William. He should have a father and mother, not a single parent raising him. It's a wonderful gift that they save this child life but now they are putting the child in a messy custody battle.

What do you make of these two stories, one about a western adult sexually assaulting southeast asian boys and the next about a couple fighting over adopting one? Is there a connection? An image that forms in the readers' minds?
